Obituary Requests Cash to Obama in Lieu of Flowers

Crowley, Francis "Two Gun" (1900-1931)
"You sons of bitches. Give my love to Mother."

Some go quietly, some leave last requests and some, final words. It's rare that you find someone willing to "break out of the mold" in regards to certain "norms". One such example is the family of the recently deceased long time Virginia Delegate and former Charlottesville Mayor Mitchell Van Yahres and the request his family put in his obituary in the Charlottesville Virginia Daily Progess :
"His friends, who nearly included everyone who met him, are asked, in lieu of expenditures on flowers and the like, to make a healthy and significant contribution to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama or, if they insist, the charity of their choice.” Obituary - Mitchell Van Yahres - Source - Daily Progress

Long time Virginia Delegate and former Charlottesville Mayor Mitchell Van Yahres died Friday from complications from lung surgery but not before he made his wishes known he was going to endorse Obama for President.

~ Gordon, George, Lord Byron (1788-1824)
"Good night."

Van Yahres served for 24 years in the Virginia House of Delegates and was also the former Mayor of Charlottesville. A staunch backer of industrial hemp and tireless advocate for the poor, Democrat Van Yahres worked to establish local farmer markets, better legal representation for poor criminal defendants and in 2001, brought forth a bill which the state of Virginia issued a formal apology to "its profound regret for the practice of involuntary sterilization of thousands of poor people and mental patients."

I am ready to meet my Maker.

Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal
of meeting me is another matter.
Winston Churchill

The Van Yahres family's request to send contributions to Obama instead of flowers was a wonderful gesture, honoring their loved one's last wishes and the life that he led, that of a man who sincerely wanted to make a difference in politics. A man who found Obama to be the most likely to carry forward his ideals.

We're also sure there will be some gnashing of teeth from local florists because of money that will go to Obama instead of fancy cemetery sprays.

Israel's Creation: A Quick History

Doug Ross Provides Accurate Historical Shorthand
Israel-Palestine

Doug Ross may have tapped into a previously-unconsidered source of power: gnomes.

That is the only explanation for the many fine multimedia presentations that Doug lays out over at Doug Ross @Journal: there must be many gnomes laboring in the dark, working on Doug's various projects.

We've been meaning to mention one that caught our eye on Christmas Eve about "What Really Happened" in the Middle East concerning the Israelis and Palestinians and the creation of the state of Israel.

But it slipped our mind.

We were over at DR's this afternoon and saw a photo from the post and it reminded us again.
As the world's attention turns to the town of Bethlehem, it's worth revisiting the question: what really happened in the Middle East? Why is it so dysfunctional? What prevents people of all religions from living in peace? The highlights of The Terrorism Awareness Project's presentation are worth reviewing.

Below are the next three photos in the post, of Hezbollah attacking Haifa in 2006.

The presentation goes on to explain the history of the creation of the Jewish state of Israel, something you won't get if use Jimmy Carter or the European Union as a reference source.

It's also something you won't get if you follow the news in the Mainstream Media.

History to the MSM is what occurs between the shampoo and blow-dry portions of yesterday's daily hair care cycle.

Many is the time we've explained the history of the Middle East in the 20th century after World War I and the British mandate of Palestine: both on radio and in print.

We've actually done some work on a similar post, but we shelved it--at least for a while--after looking at Doug's handiwork.

NOW, we'll just send the curious or misinformed over to Doug Ross @Journal to look at "What Really Happened".

Accurate, historical shorthand is always valuable in this fast-paced, largely-ignorant a-go-go world that we live in.

Roy Schneider: Jaws Montage Film Tribute

Robert Shaw, Roy Schneider and Richard Dreyfus, 1975's epic movie, Jaws

Roy Schneider, star of 1975's epic scary shark flick, Jaws, has passed away at age 75. In a salute to Schneider, DBKP has put together a mini-film clip montage of the movie that brought Schneider recognition as one of the main characters to fight the "horror" from the sea, Jaws.

Released in 1975, the movie Jaws came from the pen of writer Peter Benchley, who wrote both the novel and the screenplay. Director Stephen Spielberg turned Benchley's screenplay into a modern "horror" story, a monster on the loose, prowling the local beaches just beneath the surface of the water.

Schneider's character, new Police Chief Martin Brody of the little beach tourist town of Amity, is faced with the growing horror of bumbling bureaucrats, the town mayor and coroner, who label a fatal shark attack as a boating accident during an influx of July 4th tourists. After another attack kills a young boy in plain sight of beach goers, Brody has to deal with the influx of amateur shark hunters and an increasingly scared townspeople.

The classic "fingernails on chalkboard" scene with Quint, Robert Shaw.

The Jaws movie trailer - 1975

In the end it's Schneider's character, Brody, and two others who go out and battle the super-sized great white shark, marine biologist Mat Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfus, and crusty old fisherman Quint, played by Robert Shaw.

Schneider starred in other films, notably 1971's The French Connection and 1979's All That Jazz, but Jaws was, for us, the film that made him a star. The man who faced a giant killing machine of the sea and won.

Exit to Eden: From Erotica to Buffoonery

How Anne Rice Erotica Turned into a Movie featuring
Rosie O'Donnell in A Leather BDSM Suit

Once upon a time, there was a best-selling author, who had yet to hit it big, who liked to write dirty novels--er, that is, erotica.

In 1985, she turned out one such novel under the pen name of Anne Rampling: Exit to Eden.

The plot, such as it is summarized below.
Lisa Kelly manages an isolated BDSM resort called The Club that offers its high-end clients an exclusive setting in which they can experience the life of a Master or Mistress.

Prospective sex slaves, paid at the end of their term at Eden (which varies from six months to two years), are presented at auctions by the most respected Trainers from across the world. As Head Female Trainer and co-founder Kelly gets first pick of the new slaves, and chooses Elliot Slater -- with whom she shares an immediate and undeniable chemistry that intensifies throughout their time together, eventually resulting in love.

So, with a kinky BDSM plot and her knack for soft-core, Anne Rice completed Exit to Eden.

What happened to her book when it became a movie still probably gives Rice--the author of the Vampire Chronicles and other horror stories--nightmares.

As with any media property, the promise of a motion picture from a now-best-selling author attracted the film industry.

The film adaptation in 1994 differed greatly from the book, with a new major story line and several new characters added.

The movie was directed by Garry Marshall and starred Dana Delany, Paul Mercurio, Rosie O'Donnell.

Rosie O'Donnell???

Yes, that Rosie O'Donnell.

The film partially utilized the story of the book, with Dana Delany playing Lisa Emerson (Lisa Kelly in the book), and Paul Mercurio playing Elliot Slater. However, half of the film consisted of a new comedic detective story line written by the director.

Several new characters were created, including Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell as police officers pursuing diamond thieves to the Eden resort. These characters then start to explore BDSM as well. New dialogue and scenes for the original characters were written to include them in the new story line.

So after a brilliant idea--let the director rewrite erotica into a police comedy featuring Rosie O'Donnell in leather.

Brilliant beyond belief.

Beyond Anne Rice and her fans' belief, anyway.

The book was interesting.

However, the interest in seeing Rosie O'Donnell "start to explore BDSM" put a damper on the film's theatrical take.

It died a quick and well-deserved death.

As did any hopes of Rosie's possible career as a dominatrix.

And they say there is no God.

Barack Obama: Clean Sweep

Democrat Delegate Total

Tales from the BlancaSpere

Barack Obama has won Maine, by 18 points over his rival, Senator Hillary Clinton. This makes this weekend a clean sweep for Obama.

We go into Tuesday's Beltway Bowl with O-mentum.

Hillary Clinton has fired her campaign manager and may do other shake ups. Look for more firings, and possible hissy fits after Tuesday, when she is expected to lose all three contests.

According to MSNBC, Barack Obama currently has 943 pledged delegates. Hillary Clinton has 895. John Edwards has 26. To win the nomination, 2,025 delegates are needed. Of these 842 are super delegates, which are not chosen, and are not pledged to any candidate. They are made up of party officials, governors, senators, representatives, former Presidents, and they can change they vote at any time.

Most Democrats are worried that neither candidate will go into the convention with enough delegates to capture the nomination, making the super delegates necessary for this first time ever.

Super delegates were created after the disaster of the McGovern nomination. Super delegates were meant as a safety mechanism to prevent the unelectable from being nominated. Strangely, they were never used for Mondale, Dukakis, or Kerry.

Democrats are afraid that Obama could capture the popular vote and carry more delegates than Clinton, but that the super delegates could throw the nomination to her. Since super delegates are party insiders, and the Clintons have more pull than the Obamas, this is a very real danger.

But there is a magic number. If Obama goes into the convention with 1184 delegates, even if every single super delegate votes for Clinton, she will not have enough for the nomination. So as of this moment, if Obama can rustle another 241 delegates, he will have the nomination by default.

And then there are the 26 delegates of Edwards. John will endorse tomorrow. It is expected that he will endorse Obama, who is seen more progressive and more pro-labor than Clinton. Since under Democrat rules those delegates are Edwards' to do with as he pleases, he could give those delegates to Obama, enriching his delegate count, and inching him closer to the nomination.

Who thought that the road to the White House would be most exciting via the Denver, Colorado. The Republican race has been so horrible, I am blocking the whole thing from my memory. However with Clinton and Obama, this thing is better than a soap opera or a Broadway musical with full frontal nudity.

U.S. Military Budget Suffering Secret Cuts?

Have cuts in Military Budgets gone too far?

We received these disturbing photos in the email this morning.

We confess, we didn't know that Congress was cutting military budgets, but we challenge you to make any other conclusion.

Are they proof that military budget cuts have gone too far?

Replacement parts available at Cabala's.

Have complaints that the U.S. military has gone too high-tech caught up with the armed forces?

It appears from the pictures that the secret cuts have been across the board, affecting all services equally.

At least, it seems, they still have training funds available.
