Fat Nude German Actors Mock America in Verdi's Masked Ball
Austrian director Johann Kresnik's production of Verdi's Masked Ball is set to open in an east Germany opera house located in Erfurt.
Kresnik claims his show, the stage set with the "ruins of the World Trade Center" to be a populist critique of "modern American society", aimed at showing the "disparities between the rich and the poor".
Kresnik defends his choice of naked, obviously well fed actors, as "naked stands for people without any means, the victims of capitalism, the underclass, who don't have anything anymore".
Kresnik also said that "one has to introduce new elements, otherwise it is difficult to attract new theatregoers".
